Jogging injuries are a common occurrence.  However; implementing some preventative measures can help reduce and prevent the occurrence of a jogging injury.  The misalignment of the foot is a common factor in the causation of several kinds of running injuries listed below:

Shin Split

This manifests itself as a stabbing and aching pain in the shins that occurs occurs when the muscles and tendons covering the shin bone become inflamed.

Sprained Ankle

This is a painful injury which occurs when the inward or outward ligament stretches which can take week or even months to fully heal.

Leg, knee, and foot pain

This can be caused by overuse, pulled muscles, joint strain, and/or runner’s knee.

Stress Fracture

Stress fractures occur when tiny cracks in the bone elicit themselves due to repeatedly pounding more force into the leg bones than they can handle.

What is Foot Misalignment?

Alignment is based on how the axes of the bone line up.  When the bones do not line up properly, misalignment occurs due to the extra stress put on the outer parts of the joint.  This puts added pressure on the ligaments which weakens joints.

Common foot misalignments include: flat feet which can produce pain in the arch and lower leg, pronation where the arch of the foot flattens, and supination where the foot rolls outwards.  Achilles tendonitis and Plantar fasciitis can result.

Proper shoes and orthotics are a great way to realign your feet.  Getting a correct pair of orthotics is as easy as going to see a podiatrist.  Dr. Applegate can help recommend proper shoes and fit you for a pair of orthotics that will work best for your needs.
