Fungal Nails are also known as onychomycosis.  When the nail experiences trauma, the nail bed becomes lifted which causes fungus to invade.  If this fungus goes without treatment it can spread especially in environments which are warm, dark, and moist like in socks and shoes.

Common signs and symptoms of toenail fungus include: discoloration or yellowing of the nail, thickening or crumbling of the nail, swelling around the nail, disfigured nail, streaks or spots down the side of the nail, foul smelling debris under the nail, pain and discomfort, and complete nail loss.

Prevention plays an important role in the treatment of fungal nails.  It’s important to keep nails neatly trimmed, practicing daily good foot hygiene, always wear shoes in public areas, wear comfortable shoes, avoid tight shoes, and avoid wearing nail polish for long periods of time.  This prevents the nail from being able to breathe and can seal in fungus.
