Corns are thickened areas on the skin's surface that can be irritating and painful.  They typically are circular or cone shaped. They develop where there are areas of pressure and friction.  An example of this would be when your little toe rubs up against the side of your shoes.

This rough and thick area of skin can be dry and waxy.  The skin around the corn tends to be inflamed. When treating corns, removing the dead skin that has built up is key.  It is not a good idea to shave off corns with razors or other pedicure equipment as this can lead to an infection. If an infection does occur with your corn, contact Phillip Applegate, DPM immediately for an appointment.

Another way to treat and prevent corns is by using orthotic inserts.  We are able to fit you with a custom orthotic to fit the shape of your foot at our Cinco Ranch location.  Orthotics help the way you walk, thus reducing friction which can lead to corns.

Always wear proper fitting shoes that do not hurt you feet as this is a primary way to prevent the formation of corns.  Phillip Applegate, DPM can also help to advise you on proper fitting shoe gear. If you suspect that you may be suffering from corns, consider scheduling an appointment at Texas Foot & Ankle Specialists.
