Sometimes feet can become dry, cracked, scratchy, and uncomfortable.  Cracked heels are a more common skin problem than many realize. In severe conditions the cracked skin can bleed and be painful.  The skin on our feet is naturally dry, which is why it is important to pay special attention to the skin on our feet in addition to the skin on the rest of our body.

One of the first signs of developing cracked heels can be thick and discolored callus tissue which may cause pain in everyday motions like walking and running.  Skin may also develop a rash at this point in the progression. At this point if one does not seek treatment the open skin may become infected worsening the condition.

There are also many behaviors which can lead to dry and cracked skin.  These include: bathing in extremely hot water, using soaps that strip moisture from the skin, turning up the heat in your house which can cause air to dry out thus drying out the skin, excessive sun exposure on the heels, and wearing thin soled shoes that expose the heels.  Chronic dermatology conditions and aging can also cause the skin on the heels to dry up.

Dry cracked heels are easier to treat at the beginning stages like most conditions.  When dry heels start to develop avoid extra hot showers and try wearing thin soled shoes.  Dr. Phillip Applegate, DPM can help you find proper shoes in order to help with this condition.  Be sure to moisturize your heels daily. If dry heels have decreased your ability to walk, try placing bandages over the area, and schedule an appointment at our Cinco Ranch clinic.  Dr. Phillip Applegate, DPM can fit you for a custom orthotic to help take pressure off of your heels.
